Young pace sensation Shaheen Afridi and opening batsman Shan Masood have earned their maiden ODI call-up as Pakistan named a 16-man squad for the upcoming Asia Cup, starting in September 15 at UAE.Experienced cricketers Mohammad Hafeez and Yasir Shah were surprisingly left our of the squad for the six-nation tournament. The 18-year-old fast bowler Shaheen Afridi has been included in the squad while opening batsman Shan Masood has also received a call-up for the six-nation tournament.Afridi, 18, impressed in the U-19 World Cup in New Zealand earlier in the year and followed it up with a brilliant Pakistan Super League for the Lahore Qalandars. He earned his maiden T20 call-up following that and made his debut against the West Indies on April 3, 2018. He went wicketless but left an impression with his 0/27 from four overs.Since then, he has played two more matches and picked up four wickets with a best of 3/37 against Australia at Harare in July.Masood on the other hand, has represented Pakistan before in 12 Test matches. He made his debut against Australia at Abu Dhabi in 2013 and played his last Test against Sri Lanka at Dubai in October last year.He has scored 565 runs at an average of 23.54 with a career-best of 125 in red-ball cricket for Pakistan. On the other hand, Hafeez’s exclusion will come as a big blow to him personally, especially, after being dropped to ‘Grade B’ in Pakistan’s central contracts.Hafeez was extremely disappointed with the snub and even went onto say that he will be considering retirement.advertisementHafeez, 37, has been one of PCB’s top category contract earners for quite a while but PCB but was replaced by Babar Azam in the top category. The decision came after Hafeez refused to play the fifth ODI of the series against Zimbabwe after he was not included in the team for the first four matches of the series.Pakistan begin their Asia Cup campaign with a league game against the winner of the ongoing Asia Cup Qualifier on September 16.Full squad: Sarfraz Ahmed (C & WK), Fakhar Zaman, Shoaib Malik, Mohammad Amir, Shadab Khan, Imam ul Haq, Shan Masood, Babar Azam, Asif Ali, Haris Sohail, Mohammad Nawaz, Fahim Ashraf, Hasan Ali Junaid Khan, Usman Shinwari and Shaheen Afridi
He declined to say if the four organizations would be asked to reduce their US-based staff, which was required of the five that were earlier designated. The announcement was further evidence that a closed-door meeting last week in Hawaii between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and senior Chinese official Yang Jiechi did little to ease bilateral tensions. The five state news outlets earlier designated as foreign missions were Xinhua news agency, China Global Television Network, China Radio International and the US distributors of the People’s Daily and English-language China Daily. After these outlets were ordered to slash their numbers of Chinese employees in the United States, Beijing hit back in March by expelling US citizens working for three major newspapers — The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post. China threatened Tuesday to retaliate against new US restrictions on Chinese state media, escalating tensions between the two superpowers as they crack down on each other’s news outlets. The US State Department said Monday it was reclassifying four organizations — China Central Television, China News Service, the People’s Daily and the Global Times — as foreign missions rather than media outlets in the United States, adding to five others designated in February.China has already expelled more than a dozen American journalists as part of the row. Further retaliation? Some media rights advocates have voiced misgivings about the approach of President Donald Trump’s administration, saying it gave China a pretext to kick out journalists who have fearlessly reported on the coronavirus pandemic and the mass incarceration of Uighurs and other Turkic Muslims.State Department officials say US media are free to report critically on their government while Chinese state-run outlets report to the government. In February, China separately expelled three journalists from The Wall Street Journal after the newspaper ran an opinion piece with a headline that called the country the “sick man of Asia” — a word choice Beijing called racist.Stilwell, the assistant secretary of state, played down fears that China would expel more US journalists, saying the US actions were “simply an excuse” for Beijing to crack down on media. “Trying to tie what we do to defend ourselves to what they choose to do — to kick out the best investigative reporters, especially the ones who speak Chinese — this is all their choice,” he said. On Tuesday Beijing decried the latest US move as “bare-faced political suppression of Chinese media” that “further exposes the hypocrisy of the so-called freedom of speech and press which the US likes to flaunt”.”We strongly urge the US to reject this Cold War mindset and ideological bias… otherwise China will have no choice but to make an appropriate response,” said foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian at a routine briefing. All nine Chinese state-run news organizations will be required to report details of their US-based staff and real estate transactions to the State Department. Their news reporting will not be restricted, officials said.”These four entities are not media outlets; they are propaganda outlets,” David Stilwell, the top US diplomat for East Asia, told reporters. The Wild Fuschia Bakehouse are hoping their offering of a taste of home will prove a winner with the Irish diaspora in the USA.The Dunfanaghy based bakery’s line of dry bread mixes can bring fresh Donegal baking to kitchen tables around the world by allowing users to bake in their own home. With around 33 million Americans claiming Irish ancestry, the US market is a potentially lucrative one for Bakehouse proprietor Sian McCann who will travel to Philadelphia and Boston next month as part of a joint trade delegation from the Donegal and Derry / Strabane Councils. She plans to learn more about the US market by meeting with trade professionals and potential customers and explore the logistics of export.“We produce fresh breads, tray bakes and cakes for local retail and wholesale markets from March to December,” explained Sian.“The bakery is busy during the summer and holiday periods but quiet for the remainder of the year so to help stimulate sales during the winter months we have developed a small number of dry bread mixes.“While the mixes are meeting an existing demand within our own bakery and other local foodie outlets, a significant number of our customers are the Donegal diaspora who are taking both the bread and the mixes home with them. “The mixes replicate the breads made in the bakery, there are a maximum of five natural ingredients and they are free artificial colours and preservatives.”Sian McCann of the The Wild Fuschia Bakehouse one of seven businesses participating in the North West Trade and Investment Mission to the US in November. The line of mixes have already proved a hit with the Irish diaspora over the counter in her Main Street shop in Dunfanaghy but Sian has ambitious plans to take her sales to the next level and bring her product to them in the near future.“Based on my experience of working in the tourism industry for 10 years and in the bakery, I believe the bread mixes appeal to the diaspora as I have been selling them quite successfully from the bakery shop,” she continued.“It would, however, be much better if I could go to the market rather than waiting for them to come to me.“I would like to be able to research the market and get a feel for where the bread mixes sit in the market place in relation to their competitors. “This is a wonderful opportunity to meet with US based professionals and retailers and to discuss the requirements, pit falls and market opportunities.“I will be able to question my desk research surrounding the customers I am targeting, the needs I am addressing.“Also to find out the logistics of export as this is a new area for the business and for me personally.“I would also take the opportunity to get samples, check out my competitors, check the legal implications for my packaging and labelling and what requirements are needed to work with US distributors including the issue of currency fluctuations etc.” While much of her strategy for entering the US market will be determined by the connections and information she gathers next month, Sian has a clear vision for the company in the years ahead.“I want to invest in marketing and develop a fresh, modern on-line presence, exploiting the current social media to include e-sales, a blog and short video clips.“I believe we can increase sales by generating interest in home baking and encouraging people to give it a go and get over their fear of baking.“We want to develop a strong brand presence, initially in Donegal and the rest of Ireland and develop export links with the US and Northern Ireland and expand our range of bread mixes, based on the best-selling products from the bakery and market feedback.”The Trade and Investment Mission will be led by Donegal County Council and Derry City and Strabane District Council. It will include third level and further education providers and development organisations including the Ulster University, Letterkenny Institute of Technology, the North West Regional College and Donegal ETB.The mission takes place from 11-15 November and is funded by The Executive Office and the Irish Government. For more information on the trade mission visit www.irelandNW.com and follow the hashtag #IrelandNW19.Wild Fuschia Bakehouse aiming to be ‘in the mix’ for lucrative US Market was last modified: October 29th, 2019 by Staff WriterShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)
