Usman Khawaja’s brother Arsalan re-arrested for trying to influence witness after bail

first_imgAustralia cricketer Usman Khawaja’s brother Arsalan Tariq Khawaja was re-arrested on Thursday afternoon by Australian Federal Police and NSW Crime Commission investigators from his Sydney house on charges of breaching his bail conditions. Arsalan has now been accused of attempting to influence a witness in his case. Earlier in December, Arsala was arrested by counter-terrorism police over forging a fake terror-plot that led to his colleague, Mohamed Nizamdeen spending four weeks in solitary confinement.Arsalan’s lawyer did not apply for his release after his bail was revoked at Parramatta Bail Court on Friday. He was refused a bail ahead of his court appearance in Sydney later on Friday.According to Australian media, Arsalan Khawaja was given a bail on a $50,000 surety on December 4 and the conditions stated that he was not to go within 100 metres of the University of NSW’s Kensington or Cliffbrook campuses. On top of that, he was absolutely barred from approaching any witnesses or employees of the university’s IT department.However, he was found to have breached the conditions and will now remain in custody until his matter is heard again in February next year.Arsalan’s brother Usman Khawaja is currently playing for Australia in the Boxing Day Test against India, where the visitors have an upper hand.Arsalan, 39, was arrested in early December after being pulled over while driving in western Sydney, according to a spokesperson for New South Wales state police.Arsalan was questioned over an attempt to pervert justice and forgery by making a false document.
