When art heals reforms

first_imgIn order to ensure the rehabilitation of the adolescent inmates of Tihar Jail, the Legends of India have brought in Ratno Rudro, the leading Art Director of the national Capital to train the young inmates in visual art. Ratno Rudro is an external faculty, who is assisted by eight artists to guide the inmates in this art project. The endeavor began on June 24. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Alok Kumar Verma, the Director General of Delhi Prison (Tihar) played a pivotal role in organizing the visual art classes and said that “the training sessions shall be held every fortnight for the adolescents, as their rehabilitation is a major concern. The aim is to bring in positivity into their lives by providing them a path to settle in today’s competitive world.”He added that the art classes will also bring out the creative side of the inmates and help jail authorities to have an insight into their thinking. In the session, they were taught to creatively use their hand and foot prints to paint small leaves, bushes and birds. Dipayan Mazumdar, the Chairman, Legends of India said, “Some of their art work was so encouraging that we hope to hold an exhibition of their works by the end of this year for the world to see. A Facebook page for the inmates shall soon be created to present the work online. It would reflect the creative and aesthetic side of the Tihar inmates. Many of these inmates have a great artistic sense.” At the end of the session, he announced that 20 adolescent inmates shall be handpicked based on their existing skills for a short course in graphic design. This will help the inmates to become eligible for self-employment and it will also help them to find a job in the competitive market.  While concluding the session, he also appreciated the efforts made by the Tihar inmates and has many plans for them in the future. He added that they reflected upon ideas and stories that they were trying to tell via their respective paintings.“This exercise will enable them to raise above the root cause of crime, violence and addiction and also provide them an outlet to their emotions, enabling emotional growth,” He further added.last_img
