After a drought caused water levels to recede dramatically in an Iraq reservoir, a 3,400-year-old palace was temporarily revealed that was hailed as an “archaeological sensation.” The discovery of the ruins on the banks of the Tigris River prompted an archeological dig that scientists hope will improve understanding of the Mittani Empire, one of the least-researched empires of the Ancient Near East, the team of researchers said in a press release. “The find is one of the most important archaeological discoveries in the region in recent decades,” Kurdish archeologist Hasan Ahmed Qasim said in a press release.Image of the unearthed palace. Photo courtesy of UNIVERSITY OF TÜBINGENA joint German and Iraqi team of archaeologists led a rescue excavation of the palace in Iraq unearthed by drought, known as Kemune, before the palace was once again swallowed by the waters of the reservoir, according to the Smithsonian. “Despite the short field season, they were able to learn much about the palace, partially excavating eight of 10 rooms found within the complex. They discovered fired bricks used as floor slabs and 10 cuneiform tablets, which are currently being translated. One of them indicates that Kemune may be the ancient city of Zakhiku mentioned in other documents, suggesting the city must have lasted at least 400 years.”Archaeologists on site at the palace. A standout of the excavation was finding remains of wall paintings in vibrant shades of red and blue. “In the second millennium BCE, murals were probably a typical feature of palaces in the Ancient Near East, but we rarely find them preserved,” Puljiz says in a press release.Well-preserved wall paintings in bright shades of red and blue found in the palace. The Mitannis built a huge mud-brick wall to bolster its western front on the sloping terrain, it is thought.”Map of the near east circa 1400 BCE showing Mittani empire. Mitanni was one of several kingdoms and small states (another being Hurri) founded by the Indo-Iranians in Mesopotamia and Syria. Although originally these Indo-Iranians were probably members of Aryan tribes that later settled in India, they broke off from the main tribes on the way and migrated to Mesopotamia instead. There they settled among the Hurrian peoples and soon became the ruling noble class.Related Article: 4,000-yr-old “Lost” City Discovered – Gateway to Mesopotamia’s First Great EmpireIn a bit of trivia, the world’s oldest horse-training manual also comes from the Mittani; its people were known for their horsemanship and developed lighter, faster spoked wheels for their war chariots, said the Smithsonian.
The city government also came up with a defence for two-wheelers.

The governor’s plan has been criticized by state Treasurer Phil Angelides, one of two candidates running for the Democratic nomination for governor this year. A report by Angelides’ office said the proposal is full of gimmicks and relies on billions of dollars in uncertain funding sources. Schwarzenegger defended the plan Tuesday. “Some call it a fantastic plan for the future, and others call it too big and it is too irresponsible,” Schwarzenegger said. “Well, what I say to those critics is that they are dead wrong. In a state with the size and ambition of California, I say it is irresponsible not to have a vision this bold for our future.” Schwarzenegger also said the plan includes $2 billion to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions, an expenditure that he also characterized in economic terms. “Higher productivity from a better environment should give us an $8 billion economic benefit from our clean-air investment,” Schwarzenegger said. Tuesday’s speech to the business leaders was the latest event by Schwarzenegger designed to promote his so-called strategic growth plan since he announced it in January during his State of the State address. His audience included representatives from the Black Business Association, the Latin Business Association and the Los Angeles Business Council. Carlos Galvan, a board member of the Regional Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, said the governor’s proposal could be a boon for banks and financing companies. “If you’re going to open up a lot of contracts to bidding, these companies will need short-term financing to help them,” said Galvan, who works in the banking industry. But he also called the plan ambitious and cautioned that its final scope remains unclear. “We’ll see how far he gets with the Legislature,” Galvan said. “They have their own competing plan, and it looks like there will be a tug-of-war.” Any potential bond package from the Legislature faces a March 10 deadline to make the June primary ballot. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Arnold Schwarzenegger will do more than just help California keep pace with a booming population, the governor told a crowd of business leaders Tuesday. It also will be a boon for construction companies and their workers, providing a long-term boost to California’s resurgent economy. Schwarzenegger combined two of his favorite themes in an address to 250 business leaders who gathered at the University of Southern California to hear him promote his $222.6 billion public works package: job growth and the need to rebuild California’s aging roads, schools, levees, prisons and government buildings. He said his plan would lead to a construction boom creating thousands of jobs. Every $1 billion spent on road building, for example, would lead to nearly 19,000 jobs for working families, generate $750 million in labor income and bring an additional $65 million in tax revenue to the state, the governor said. He wants voters to approve the sale of $68 billion in bonds in a series of elections through 2014 to help pay for the projects. The rest of the money would come from other sources, much of it from federal and local governments and the private sector. Several legislative committees have been holding hearings on aspects of Schwarzenegger’s proposals. They will make recommendations to a two-house conference committee that will try to agree on how much of the governor’s plan to enact. Legislative leaders have indicated that Schwarzenegger will get much less than he’s proposed, which likely would translate into a less ambitious jobs and construction program. The legislation approved by lawmakers also is likely to include money for projects not included in Schwarzenegger’s plan, such as buying land for parks and wildlife habitat and upgrading hospitals.
Mumbai, Mar 30 (PTI) Actor-filmmaker Farhan Akhtar says one of the reasons that todays characters in films appear relatable is more real and believable styling. The 42-year-old “Wazir” star, who unveiled Code by Lifestyles Spring Summer collection at an event here, said fashion in films has gone through a sea of change.”There was a time when everyone on screen looked like they were made up and made to wear clothes that they necessarily didnt pull out of their own wardrobes – that has changed. Now when you watch a movie, everyone looks like they belong to the character and even their clothes belong to that character,” Farhan said in a statement here.”I think this is a very big change as this has made the experience of watching a movie feel more real and believable. You can say so much more about a person just by the way they dress, hence, costume plays a huge role in the viewing of a film. And yes, it has definitely changed a lot,” he added. The mutli-faceted performer, known for his dapper style sense, also feels the market for mens fashion has become bigger.”I think there is a lot of choice for men in terms of clothes for them to dress differently as per the occasion. One spots people sporting a cool, easy and chilled-out look, where they are happy and comfortable, dressy but not over the top. Looking smart without making it seem like youve put in an effort is a big trend.”advertisementSharing his tips on fitness and fashion, Farhan said, “I think eating healthy and exercising is very important – both make one feel very optimistic and positive. Also, being true in terms of fashion, that is being true to who you are, is really important.” PTI JUR NRB PSH BAS
