Photo: Simon Charland/APTNThe Canadian PressThe B.C. prosecution service says it does not have enough evidence to pursue charges of criminal contempt against 14 people who were arrested in January when RCMP enforced an interim court injunction at the Gidimt’en checkpoint on the Wet’suwet’en unceded traditional territory. The prosecution service says in a statement submitted to the B.C. Supreme Court in Prince George that the cases were referred to it for potential prosecution of criminal contempt on Feb. 4.After a review, it says it is not satisfied there is enough evidence for a substantial likelihood of conviction. It says those charges are separate from Criminal Code charges arising from the same events and it has approved a charge of assaulting a police officer with a weapon against one of the 14 individuals arrested.Police made the arrests on Jan. 7 as they enforced an injunction obtained by Coastal GasLink, which is building a natural gas pipeline from northeastern B.C. to Kitimat. (RCMP tactical squad breaks through the Gidimt’en checkpoint 20 km from the Unist’ot’en camp)The company says it has signed agreements with all 20 elected First Nation governments along the pipeline path, but some members of the Wet’suwet’en have said it has no jurisdiction without the consent of its hereditary chiefs. In the statement, Crown counsel Trevor Shaw says the decision not to pursue the charges relates to whether information was available on the injunction.“One element of criminal contempt relates to knowledge (whether direct, inferred or otherwise) of the terms of the injunction,” he said.“After a review of the evidence at this point, the BCPS is not satisfied that there is the necessary evidentiary basis for a substantial likelihood of conviction.”The injunction originally included a term requiring that a copy of the order be posted on the company’s website, as well as near a bridge where the pipeline opponents and members of the First Nation had established a gate on the logging road that Coastal GasLink needs to access for its project. But the prosecution service says the required posting at the bridge was deleted by order of the court on Jan. 4.The events on Jan. 7 were also dynamic and did not include various steps or actions relating to notice that might have arisen in a different context, the statement said.

StumbleUpon Lee Willows, YGAM: Education is central to gambling reform July 9, 2020 Submit Share Related Articles UK gambling adopts toughest online advertising code to protect underage audiences August 27, 2020 ASA monitoring sweep marks gambling as the worst underage advertising offender August 26, 2020 Share AG Communications, trading as Karamba.com, has been reprimanded by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), after two issues put forward by one complainant were upheld.Related to a webpage regarding the online slot Starburst, featured under the title “Tips and tricks on how to Win at Starburst,” various aspects of “The Starburst Strategy” were featured following a “the top 5 tips for winning” statement. It was also detailed that text on the advert contained a link to a further web page titled “How to Choose a Winning Slot Machine,” featuring further tips on increasing the chances of winning slot games.Issuing two complaints, it was first challenged that it could be misleading due to the implication that particular strategies would increase the chances of winning.Furthermore it was challenged that it “was socially irresponsible because it encouraged gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm”.Responding AG Communications stated that the web pages were uploaded by human error, with its usual internal procedures of approval to ensure compliance with regulations, nor training regarding marketing guidelines, not followed by the personnel responsible for claims in the ad.Also stressing the low levels of user traffic attracted, Karamba emphasised that it had withdrawn the ads, commenced a full internal review and reiterated approval procedures to staff. Concluding that claims had not been substantiated, were misleading and that it was irresponsible, the ASA ruled that: “The ad must not appear again in its current form. “We told Karamba.com to ensure their future marketing communications contained nothing that was likely to encourage irresponsible gambling behaviour that could lead to financial, social or emotional harm. “Additionally, future marketing communications must not misleadingly imply that particular strategies improved a consumer’s chances of winning Starburst when that was not the case, and Karamaba.com must hold adequate substantiation in support of such claims.”
Published on Chhattisgarh elections: BJP to release manifesto on Saturday Chhattisgarh SHARE COMMENTS COMMENT regional elections Elections to the 90-member Assembly will be held in two phases on November 12 and 20 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday accused the Congress of backing urban Maoists who he said have ruined the lives of poor Adivasi youth.Addressing his first election rally for the state Assembly polls scheduled later this month, Modi also said Congress makes “fun” of adivasis (tribals).“I don’t know why Congress makes fun of adivasis. Once I had gone for a rally in North-East India and wore a traditional adivasi headgear but Congress leaders made fun of it. This was an insult of adivasi culture,” he said.Modi said he will not rest till he fulfils late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s dreams for a prosperous Chhattisgarh, adding the Congress-led government did not do enough to develop the Naxal-infested Bastar region citing the Maoist menace as an excuse.“The urban Maoists who live in air conditioned homes in the cities, look clean and whose children study abroad, remote control the adivasi children in the Naxal dominated areas,” Modi said.“I want to ask the Congress why it supports the urban Maoists when the government takes action against them and come to Bastar and speak against Naxalism,” he said.Describing Naxals as “monsters with evil mindset”, the Prime Minister said earlier governments did not do enough for development of Bastar region.“Will you forgive such people? These people will not win Chhattisgarh. I appeal to you to ensure that BJP wins all seats in the Bastar region. If anyone else wins, it will be a blot on Bastar’s dreams,” he added.Modi said no other Prime Minister visited Bastar as often as he did. “I have not come empty handed but given you some scheme and development programme. We are working hard to eradicate unemployment, poverty and hunger from the region.Previously there were resources but nothing happened,” he said.Modi said he wanted to serve the people of Chhattisgarh and fulfil Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s dreams of a prosperous state.“I will not rest till I fulfil his dreams. Chhattisgarh is now 18 years old. There are different dreams and aspirations of 18 year olds now,” he said.Congress speaks of Dalits, deprived sections and tribals but the party considers them as vote banks and not as human beings, he said.“Do you want a government which works or one which stops development works,” he said.Modi said his government has never discriminated among people. “Previous governments did that. Our government works for development of all,” he said.Elections to the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly will be held in two phases on November 12 and November 20.
