Apple’s iPhone SE and Xiaomi’s Mi 5 are easily among the latest and greatest phones in the market right now. Both the phones are making their respective platforms (iOS and Android) proud in every sense of the word. While rocking the latest and greatest hardware inside, both these phones are pinnacle of design prowess as well. They are small (4-inch and 5-inch) and easy to hold and operate. Here’s a thorough run-down of the Apple iPhone SE and Xiaomi Mi 5.Also read: Xiaomi Mi 5 quick review: This could be the phone of the year Design and build qualityThe iPhone SE looks exactly like the iPhone 5S. It has a similar all-metal build – with top and bottom ends being made of glass — with chamfered edges (and rounded corners), a rear camera module that sits flush inside the body and a front mounted Touch ID fingerprint scanner. The rounded volume buttons, power button on the top, headphone jack, speaker, and microphone on the bottom all stay put in the same position as in the iPhone 5S.Also read: iPhone SE: Everything we know so far There are subtle changes over the iPhone 5S though. The shiny silvery highlight along the edge has been replaced by a smoother matter finish that kind of blends into the whole thing. You also get a colour-matched stainless steel Apple logo this time round. All in all, the iPhone SE follows a dated design – or a recycled one, if you may – but still holds ground for being one of the best designed 4-inch phones ever.advertisementThe Xiaomi Mi 5 on the other hand takes major design cues from the company’s other flagship phone, the Mi Note. According to Xiaomi, the Mi 5 builds upon the original design scheme of the Mi Note. Those unfamiliar with the Mi Note will notice a stark resemblance to some of Samsung’s flagship phones, more precisely the Galaxy Note 5. But, the Mi5 is actually a Mi Note (which came before the Note 5) only done better (in most aspects), a gradual refinement if you may.The company is offering the Mi5 in two options with respect to build material: one with a 3D ceramic body while the other with a 3D glass surface. India gets just the 3D glass surface variant for now. Also read: iPhone SE Preview: Good buy but only for iPhone 5S users The Mi 5 has a body (made of Corning Gorilla Glass 4) that gradually curves on all sides and is joined together at the centre by a metal frame. The font — of the phone — is dominated by an ultra-thin borderless display and a physical home button that houses a fingerprint scanner. Overall, the Mi5 has an excellent screen-to-body ratio thanks to the almost bezel-less screen and a home button that is smaller (in dimension) in comparison to rival phones offered by Apple and Samsung. At 7.25mm the Mi 5 is thinner than the iPhone SE (7.6mm).DisplayThe iPhone SE comes with a 4-inch LED-backlit IPS LCD (Retina) display with a 640 x 1136 pixels resolution. Apple’s latest iOS 9.3 update introduces a Night Shift mode to the phone that ‘automatically shifts the colours in your display to the warmer end of the spectrum’ post sunset. Also read: How the Apple iPhone SE compares with the iPhone 6 and 5S The Mi 5 phone comes with a 5.15-inch FullHD IPS display with a 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and comes with key Xiaomi standouts like Sunlight Display which in tandem with the screen’s low reflectivity offers better screen clarity in harsh light situations.SoftwareWhile the iPhone SE runs Apple’s latest iOS 9.3 update out-of-the-box, the Mi 5 comes with Android 6.0 Marshmallow-based MIUI 7.Hardware and connectivityThe iPhone SE is powered by the same processor as the iPhone 6S, which is a 64-bit A9 chip (with M9 motion co-processor for an always-on ‘Hey Siri’). It will be available in 16GB and 64GB memory variants. Expandable storage is not supported. The Mi 5 is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal memory which is non-expandable.The iPhone SE is a singleSIM phone, while the Mi 5 supports dualSIM. Both the phones support 4G LTE connectivity option.CameraThe iPhone SE sports a 12-megapixel iSight camera on the rear with f/2.2 aperture and dualLED (dual tone) flash similar to the one on the iPhone 6S. Live Photos and 4K video are supported. There’s also a 1.2-megapixel FaceTime camera on the front with f/2.4 aperture. The Mi 5 sports a 16-megapixel camera on the rear with 4-axis optical image stabilisation, phase detection autofocus and LED flash. It comes with DTI pixel-to-pixel isolation technology and can do 4K videos. There’s also a 4-megapixel (2 micron pixel) camera on the front with 36 smart beauty profiles.advertisementBatteryWhile the iPhone SE uses a non-removable 1,642 mAh battery, the Mi 5 is backed by a 3,000mAh battery (again non-removable).PriceThe iPhone SE has been priced at Rs 39,000 for the base 16GB memory variant while the Xiaomi Mi 5 will cost buyers Rs 24,999 for the 32GB memory/3GB RAM variant.
