Exclusive: Angad Bedi says his Inside Edge character has no resemblance with MS Dhoni

first_imgBollywood actor Angad Bedi has denied drawing inspiration from former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his role in the web series Inside Edge. Bedi is playing a role of a captain, who is upright and honest.Inside Edge revolves around a cricket team franchise — Mumbai Mavericks — playing in the Powerplay League T20 league. The 10 episode show is about conflicts, sex, money, and power.Speaking exclusively to IndiaToday.in, Bedi said his cricketing background helped him fit into the character and he drew inspiration from his father and former India captain, Bishan Singh Bedi. Here are the excerpts from the interview.Jepher C Nickels: You are playing a cricket captain in Inside Edge. Having been so closely associated with the IPL, was it difficult to not draw inspiration from some real-life cricketers?Angad Bedi: Honestly, when I am playing any character, I don’t like drawing inspiration from anyone becuse in the mind if you start thinking of anybody else then there is a tendency for the human mind to make you start acting like that particular person.JCN: A lot of fans feel your character bears some resemblance to MS Dhoni. Was that intentional or did that come about because you have seen him from such close quarters?Bedi: The good part has been my cricket background has helped. I have a fair enough understanding of the game and know a players’ body language all that helped. No resemblance to MS Dhoni or any other cricketer. In fact if there is any inspiration it’s from Bishan Bedi, my father. I play a character who is very honest and upright individual. If you are thinking of MS Dhoni, it’s not. My father captained India for 5 years, he played international cricket for 17 years. The way he led his life, the way he stood up for what is right. He was quite honest, he was heard the most. I drew inspiration from that perspective.advertisementJCN: Your dad is a cricket legend. How has he enjoyed watching you play a cricketer?Bedi: I played age group cricket. But I wanted to be an actor. I used to bowl left-arm spin, but obviously to bowl like him nobody can do. I had my own style. I have a fair bit of understanding as to what fitness levels are required, what kind of body language cricketers should have. All those things came kind of organically to me.JCN: As an IPL host, have you ever noticed any fallouts or problems affecting teams from close quarters? Did those memories help you shape your character?Bedi: No, not at all. This is all fictional. There could be some similarities with the Indian Premier League but it’s a complete work of fiction. When I hosted the IPL, we didn’t get so close to the players, team owners or establishments. We just did our job.last_img read more

The Ashes: ‘Wiser’ England ready for Australian aggression, says Joe Root

first_imgEngland were caught out by Australia’s aggression during the ill-fated 2013/14 Ashes campaign but captain Joe Root says they are fully prepared for short-pitched bowling and on-field chatter when the series kicks off in Brisbane next week. (England’s Moeen Ali fit to return ahead of Ashes opener)Root was a member of Alastair Cook’s side that was demolished by a Mitchell Johnson-led pace assault and sledged relentlessly throughout the 5-0 series defeat four years ago.Root, then 22, won praise for a defiant half-century in the Adelaide Test but, like the rest of the England batters, struggled to score runs on most of Australia’s pitches.”I think last time it maybe caught us out,” Root told reporters on Tuesday in Townsville where England are preparing for their final warmup match against a Cricket Australia XI.”I think we’re a little bit wiser to it this time around. (The Ashes: England’s Jake Ball in doubt for warmup game, George Garton drafted in)”It’s still about making sure we’re absolutely prepared for any scenario out there.”We’re expecting it to be hostile, we’re expecting it to be very loud and rowdy atmosphere at the Gabba.”Hopefully we’ll be in a really good place and really ready for that because I think we’ve got our heads round what to expect.”With all-rounder Ben Stokes absent from the tour, Root will have a bigger load to carry in leading a team with a number of inexperienced batsmen.Australia spinner Nathan Lyon said last week the home side’s bowlers would compete fiercely for the England captain’s wicket.advertisementRoot was unfazed by the attention.”I’ve heard a lot of chat about them targeting me in particular,” he said.”From our point of view we’ll be targeting every single one of them, we won’t be singling any guys out.”Bring it on. It’s what it’s about. You want that competitive element and those little in-house rivalries, if you like.”Former England captain and media pundit Michael Vaughan has accused Australia of making things hard for England in their preparations by serving up low-quality tour sides away from the Test venues. The tourists will play another modest Cricket Australia XI in the remote northern city of Townsville from Wednesday.Root said it was nothing different from the last tour.”I think we’ve mentally approached that slightly differently this time round and probably slightly better, if I’m being brutally honest,” he said.”Obviously it would have been nice to get a feel for the grounds, especially for the guys who haven’t played at those venues.”I don’t think it makes too much of a difference.”last_img read more

Boxer Tony Ayala Dies at 52

first_imgSAN ANTONIO, TX – A call went into 911 on the morning of May 12 about a man who was slumped over. The medics arrived. The overweight 52 year-0ld man had gone into cardiac arrest. He died. The man’s name was Tony Ayala.  To most people that name doesn’t mean a thing. But boxing’s legendary trainer Lou Duva, who has seen them all, once said: “the only fighter I have ever seen who I would compare to Rocky Marciano [boxing’s only heavyweight champion to retire undefeated at 49-0] is Tony Ayala. At 22-0, the 19 year-old Tony Ayala Jr. (his father, Tony, Sr. was also his trainer) was en route to a shot at the world’s middleweight championship and was on the verge of superstardom.  He was set to fight super-welterweight champion Davey Moore in 1983, but was arrested on New Year’s Day that year for burglary and rape. He had two prior assaults against women, but only received probation.Moore went on to lose his title to another legend, Roberto Duran, in 1983, while the undefeated phenom Ayala went to jail. Shortly after his release, Ayala began his comeback, 16 years later at age 36.Five wins in a row over the next year, all by knockout, propelled his record to 27-0. If he continued on that path, it would be one of the greatest comebacks in the history of boxing, if not all of sports. But it was not to be.  He failed to answer the bell for Round 9 against the Mexican warrior Yori Boy Campas, and so, at 37, a demoralized Ayala cried in the ring, at the realization of having suffered his first ever professional loss.Ayala would win his next four fights, though any talk of his reaching the top of the game subsided, and he fought for the last time, and lost, in 2003 against little known Anthony Bonsante, who proceeded to knock him out.He went back to prison in 2004 for probation violation and possession of drugs, and was released in 2014, a month after his father’s death. He worked at the family gym until his last moments of life – it’s where he died. And thus ended the tumultuous life of a brutally violent but supremely talented man. RIP.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Yankees Beat Blue Jay, 2-1

He hit a grounder and struck out in his first game since bruising his left wrist in last year’s AL wild-card loss to Houston. “The results weren’t great, but I felt good,” Gardner said.Castro hit an opposite-field drive to right off Drew Hutchison and made a running grab in shallow right on Kevin Pillar’s pop fly.Acquired from the Chicago Cubs in December, Castro moved from shortstop to second base last season and played 38 games at the position.“I think he’s doing pretty good,” Yankees Manager Joe Girardi said. “We’ve been pleased with him so far at second base. I think he’s done a really good job, worked extremely hard. The transition for him I don’t think is going to be a problem.”Hutchison, bidding for the fifth starter spot, allowed two runs and four hits in 4 2-3 innings.“I think I’ve been throwing the ball well,” Hutchison said. “I’ve been accomplishing the things I wanted to accomplish.”Nathan Eovaldi struck out two and walked two over two hitless innings in his second spring training appearance for the Yankees since his season was cut short after a Sept. 5 start due to right elbow inflammation.“My arm felt great,” Eovaldi said. “I thought my pitches were good. Brady to drop appeal, serve 4-game ‘Deflategate’ suspension

first_imgTweetPinShare0 Shares FOXBOROUGH, Massachusetts (AP) — Tom Brady says he will not ask the U.S. Supreme Court to block his four-game “Deflategate” suspension, ending his fight on Friday in a scandal that tested the power of the NFL commissioner and tarnished the reputation of one of the league’s greatest players.“It has been a challenging 18 months and I have made the difficult decision to no longer proceed with the legal process,” the New England Patriots quarterback said in a Facebook post. “I’m going to work hard to be the best player I can be for the New England Patriots and I look forward to having the opportunity to return to the field this fall.”The decision by the four-time Super Bowl champion comes two days after Brady’s case was turned aside by the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. His only remaining hope to take the field when the Patriots open the season against Arizona on Sept. 11 had been a stay from the nation’s highest court, which accepts about one percent of the appeals submitted.More worrisome for Brady and the Patriots, though, was the chance that he would receive a stay — which would require only the blessing of a single Supreme Court justice, in this case Ruth Bader Ginsburg — only to have the whole court later refuse to hear the case. That could allow the suspension to fall at a more inconvenient time in the season, perhaps including the playoffs.“This decision was made in the interest of certainty and planning for Tom prior to the New England Patriots season,” the NFL Players Association said in a statement. But the union said it was still considering whether to seek on its own a Supreme Court ruling that could limit Commissioner Roger Goodell’s authority to punish players. Dropping the case would leave in place a “broken system that must be fixed,” the union said this week.Even if the union fights on, though, Brady would still sit out the first four games of the season, when the Patriots face the Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, Houston Texans and Buffalo Bills. Backup Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to start for New England instead.Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who has parted ways with longtime league allies over the punishment, renewed his complaint that the suspension was “unprecedented, unjust, and unreasonable.”“Unfortunately, this stopped being about air pressure a long time ago,” he said in a statement. “This entire process has indelibly taken a toll on our organization, our fans and most importantly, Tom Brady. His reluctant decision to stop pursuing further action and to put this situation behind him is what he feels is best for the team in preparation for this season and is fully supported by me and our entire organization.”With NFL football player Tom Brady pictured on screen, host John Cena speaks at the ESPY Awards at the Microsoft Theater on Wednesday, July 13, 2016, in Los Angeles. (Photo by Chris Pizzello/Invision/AP)Despite the suspension, the Patriots remain overwhelming favorites to win the AFC East for the 13th time in 14 seasons, and the gambling website Bovada listed them as the top choice to win the Super Bowl.An NFL spokesman said the league would have no comment.Originally suspended for four games after the league concluded the Patriots intentionally underinflated the footballs used in the AFC Championship on Jan. 18, 2015, Brady embarked on an odyssey to clear his name. A federal judge overturned the suspension, allowing Brady to play last season, but the 2nd Circuit reinstated it this spring.last_img read more

It is United’s worst 17-game start to a league campaign since the 1990-91 season, and the team currently has a goal difference of zero.Mourinho started his 2½-year tenure at United by winning two titles in his first season — the English League Cup and the Europa League — but failed to win a trophy in his second season and was criticized for the team’s pragmatic playing style and his treatment of some players. His relationship with Paul Pogba, the club’s record signing, appeared broken after leaving the France midfielder out of the team for its last three league games.Mourinho had also been unhappy that United’s board failed to back his wish to sign a central defender in the offseason. United has already conceded more goals in the league than it did in all of last season.Liverpool manager Juergen Klopp, right, and Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho seen prior to the English Premier League soccer match between Liverpool and Manchester United at Anfield in Liverpool, England, Sunday, Dec. 16, 2018. (AP Photo/Rui Vieira)Mourinho’s final match in charge was the 3-1 loss at Anfield, after which he said his players were brittle and couldn’t cope with the intensity and physicality of Liverpool — historically United’s biggest rival.Mourinho lasted the same length of time at United as he did in his previous job at Chelsea, when he was also fired just before Christmas in his third season. He signed a new contract in January until June 2020 and will reportedly receive compensation of 24 million pounds ($30 million). In his six major coaching stints — at Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Chelsea again and United — Mourinho has only lasted more than three years once. That was in his first spell at Chelsea.United reached the last 16 in the Champions League, where it will play Paris Saint-Germain over two legs in February and March.TweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Reports: David Ortiz Shot In Dominican Republic

first_imgSANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic — Former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz was hospitalized Monday following surgery for a gunshot wound after being ambushed by a man in a bar in his native Dominican Republic, authorities said.Dominican National Police Director Ney Aldrin Bautista Almonte said Ortiz was at the Dial Bar and Lounge in Santo Domingo around 8:50 p.m. Sunday when a gunman approached from behind and shot him at close range. Ortiz was taken to the Abel Gonzalez clinic, where he underwent surgery, and his condition was stable, Bautista said.Ortiz’s father, Leo, speaking to reporters outside the clinic, said his son was out of danger and there wasn’t any collateral damage, meaning no damage to major organs. He said he had no idea why someone would have shot at his son.“He is out of surgery and stable; he is resting,” Leo Ortiz said. “Big Papi will be around for a long time.”Leo Ortiz, center, father of former Boston Red Sox slugger David Ortiz talks with journalists at the hospital where his son was hospitalized after being shot in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Sunday, June 9, 2019. (AP Photo / Ricardo Hernandez)The Boston Red Sox, in a statement early Monday, said they have been notified by Ortiz’s family that he sustained a gunshot wound to his “lower back/abdominal region” and that he is recovering after surgery. The Red Sox said they offered the Ortiz family “all available resources to aid in his recovery” and they will continue to keep them in their hearts. The alleged gunman was captured and beaten by a crowd of people at the bar, Bautista said. He said police are waiting until the man undergoes treatment for his injuries before questioning him.Investigators are trying to determine whether Ortiz was the intended target, Bautista said. Two other people were wounded, Bautista said, including Jhoel López, a Dominican TV host who was with Ortiz. Bautista said police believe López was wounded by the same bullet.López was shot in the leg and his injuries were not life-threatening, said his wife, Liza Blanco, who is also a TV host.Police did not identify the third person or detail that person’s injuries. The Dial Bar and Lounge is located in eastern Santo Domingo on Venezuela Avenue, a bustling nightlife district packed with dance clubs and pricey bars that Ortiz is known to frequent. Ortiz, who lives at least part of the year in the Dominican Republic, is often seen getting his cars washed and hanging out with friends, including other baseball players, artists and entertainers. The 43-year-old Ortiz hit 541 homers in 20 major league seasons, including 14 with the Red Sox. He helped lead Boston to three World Series titles and retired after the 2016 season. He was a 10-time All-Star and World Series MVP in 2013.By: Martín Jose Alcántara, Associated PressTweetPinShare0 Shareslast_img read more

Sarri: Becoming Juventus Coach Is A ‘Crowning Achievement’ (Video)

first_imgThe 34-year-old Ronaldo scored 21 goals in his first Serie A season at Juventus. His single-season record is 48 goals in the Spanish league for Real Madrid in 2014-15.Sarri said that he left Chelsea after only one season because he “felt a need to return to Italy.”He succeeds Massimiliano Allegri, who guided Juventus to five straight Italian titles but was unable to bring home the most desired trophy — the Champions League — despite two runner-up finishes in the top European competition.Sarri reportedly has a massive bonus in his contract if he leads Juventus to the elusive European title.“I’ve never seen a club so determined to hire a coach,” Sarri said. “That convinced me right away.”Sarri struggled with criticism upon his arrival at Chelsea but then led the London club to the Europa League title.“I’ve always had the fans skeptical at the start. I come from a different breed and it’s fair that there’s this skepticism,” Sarri said. “There’s only one way to get through that and that’s to win. We’ve got to go out there onto the pitch to enjoy ourselves and put on a show.”TweetPinShare0 Shares TURIN, Italy — With his attack-minded 4-3-3 formation, new Juventus coach Maurizio Sarri foresees Cristiano Ronaldo setting more scoring records.Sarri was presented Thursday after signing a three-year contract with the club that has won Serie A for the last eight seasons.Sarri called the Juventus job the “crowning achievement of a long and difficult career.”“I’ve taken a long road to get here, from Serie C2 to B, A, Premier League and now Juventus. It’s special to be here. It’s the best squad in Italy,” Sarri said. “I’m coming from Chelsea, which has an inferior history to that of Juventus. It’s another step forward for me.“Coaching Ronaldo is also an escalation. I coached great players at Chelsea but with him it’s the best in the world. He already holds all of the records you can have in world football but I would like help him break some more records.”last_img read more

Self-driving vehicles — are we nearly there yet?

first_imgGoogle’s self-driving cars have accomplished close to two million miles of motoring with a human “driver” merely supervising. And these are not the only self-driving vehicles mixing with ordinary road users on streets across the world. Volvo has trialed vehicles with an autopilot in its hometown of Gothenburg in Sweden, and plans to extend the program to the UK. Another company, nuTonomy, has been testing robotic taxis in Singapore since April 2016, and also has projects ongoing in the US and the UK.As the ultimate destination for autonomous driving technologies, self-driving vehicles can potentially reduce road traffic accidents. They also promise greater access to independent mobility for groups like non-car owners and the elderly. In fact, these technologies are already permeating an increasing number of cars in the market today, supporting driver-assistance systems that are rapidly becoming expected features. These include parking assistance, autonomous braking, intersection assistance, collision avoidance, lane departure warning, and pedestrian detection.A major enabler of this trend towards end-to-end automation via increasingly assisted driving is the continued Moore’s law advancement of semiconductor integration. Not only has this made the necessary computing power available to perform the complex algorithms at the heart of these autonomous systems, but increasingly highly integrated automotive ICs hold the key to delivering systems that are small enough for use in today’s vehicles and deliver the high reliability demanded by the automotive industry, all at an economically viable price. The latest devices in the market significantly reduce the number of components needed to build the subsystems that are essential for autonomous driving. These include navigation, motion sensing, and situational awareness using a combination of technologies such as video, LIDAR, and radar.Navigation Navigation and guidance typically rely on a Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) such as the GPS (Global Positioning System). Present position, speed, and heading can be computed based on complex analysis of signals received from at least four of the constellation of over 60 low-orbit GPS satellites. Location accuracy can be on the order of one meter depending on factors such as atmospheric conditions and multipath effects. Although a human driver can hop in a car and start driving almost immediately, a self-driving vehicle may need to wait until the GPS receiver has computed its first fix before departing. This can take between 30 and 60 seconds to establish an initial position.GPS subsystems are now available as sophisticated System-on-Chip (SoC) IC or multi-chip chipsets, which require only power and an antenna and include an embedded, application-specific compute engine to perform the intensive calculations. Although many of these ICs have an internal RF preamplifier for the 1.5GHz GPS signal, designers may opt to put the antenna on the roof with a co-located low-noise amplifier (LNA) RF preamplifier, and then locate the GPS circuitry in a more convenient location within the vehicle. The antenna must have right-hand circular polarization characteristics (RHCP) to match the polarization of the GPS signals, and can be a ceramic-chip unit, a small wound stub design, or some other configuration. An example of a GPS module is the RXM-GPS-F4-T from Linx Technologies. This 18mm × 13mm × 2.2mm surface-mount unit requires a single 1.8V supply at 33mA, and can acquire and track up to 48 satellites simultaneously (more channels allow the GPS to see and capture more data and thus yield better results with fewer dropouts). While GPS is an essential function for autonomous vehicles, it’s not sufficient by itself. The GPS signal is vulnerable to radio interference and can also be blocked by urban canyons and tunnels. Outages can last for a few seconds or many minutes, sometimes even longer. However, accurate and continuous navigation information has become essential to today’s road users, not only to ensure the best possible driving experiences but also to maintain delivery schedules, keep track of assets in the field, and aid emergency services. To supplement the GPS, the autonomous vehicle can use inertial guidance, which requires no external signal of any type. Automotive inertial measurement has been realized thanks to advances in MEMS (Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems) technology, which enables the 3-axis accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer needed for displacement, rotation, and attitude sensing to be produced as tiny discrete devices or as part of an integrated Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) that can be housed in a standard IC package. The IMU cannot detect absolute position, only the motion of the vehicle. In the event of blocking or degradation of the GPS signal, the vehicle’s position is calculated by dead-reckoning using the last known position coupled with IMU data. Firmware running on the GPS receiver is responsible for fusing the GPS and sensor data to continuously calculate the vehicle’s location. Recently there have been important developments in three-dimensional dead reckoning, which allows the navigation system to maintain accuracy on multi-level highways and when entering and leaving parking garages at venues such as airports and shopping malls.Multi-sensor situational awareness Equally important to increasingly advanced autonomous-driving features — and, ultimately, to self-driving vehicles — is awareness of other road users and pedestrians, road furniture, markings, junctions, signage, and any objects that may require a response from the vehicle, such as an obstruction that may require avoiding actions.Several technologies, including video, radar, and LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), are viable. Vehicles on the road today use a combination of sensing techniques to detect hazards at long range or close to the vehicle and inform the driver while — at the same time — anticipating any potentially necessary responses such as braking so as to minimize the vehicle’s reaction time. Combining data from multiple sensors also helps avoid dependence on any single subsystem or technology so as to offer the best possible performance and reliability. As far as video is concerned, effective visual imaging places great demands on processing complexity and throughput. Heavy graphic processing is needed to make sense of images. There is a need for depth perception as well as basic imaging. Also, conditions of lighting, shadows, and other factors can challenge the system’s ability to interpret any captured images correctly. Figure 1 shows how an automotive vision system can be reduced to a small number of components by combining TI’s high-performance DaVinci digital media processor with high-speed SerDes devices and minimal additional components.Figure 1. Automotive vision system developed and AEC-Q100 certified by TI (Source: Mouser) The Google self-driving prototypes use cameras for near vision and reading road signs and traffic lights, and a rooftop-mounted multi-laser LIDAR system that can construct 3D images and calculate the range to distant objects. Laser pulses of short duration help to maximize depth resolution and the detected reflections are used to create a 3D point-like “cloud.” Subsequent processing performs object identification, motion vector determination. and collision prediction, and calculates avoidance strategies. The LIDAR unit is well-suited to “big picture” imaging and provides the needed 360-degree view. Google has reported on the work accomplished to “teach” its vehicles how to detect vulnerable road users such as cyclists, including recognizing cycles of many different types, responding appropriately to hand signals, and anticipating cyclists’ actions, such as pulling out to avoid a parked vehicle.Radar completes the picture Front-facing and rear-facing radar built into the fenders provide the best information when the action is close to the vehicle, such as when parking, lane-changing, or in dense traffic. 24GHz radar has become extremely widely used for short- and mid-range driver-assistance systems such as collision avoidance, blind-spot detection, self-parking, and lane-departure warning. Intensive integration helps realize such systems within tight space constraints to allow in-fender mounting, relying on highly-featured ICs such as the Analog Devices AD8283 6-channel radar receive path Analog Front End (AFE) IC with on-chip filtering and ADC. Figure 2 shows a simplified block diagram of a single channel of this device. Techniques such as using printed-circuit tracks to form part of the antenna are also used to minimize overall solution size.Figure 2. One of the six channels of the AD8283 radar AFE for handling reflected pulse signals (Source: Mouser) Going forward, automakers are adopting 77GHz radar for systems such as Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which requires longer range and higher power output. A 77GHz radar can meet these requirements with a smaller antenna, and can also support the features that formerly employed 24GHz radar. Early in 2016, STMicroelectronics announced a multi-channel automotive-radar IC that integrates three 77GHz transmitters and four receivers on a single chip to deliver enhanced object recognition and resolution. Conclusion The increasingly sophisticated driver-assistance systems that feature in today’s new vehicles are paving the way towards fully autonomous motoring that will require no human intervention from the beginning to the end of the journey. Systems on the market today tend to augment the driver’s awareness, to ease the burdens of driving, and to improve safety, while some vehicles are capable of taking complete control for short periods. Ongoing trials of self-driving vehicles are underway on public roads around the world. Favorable results will help to build public confidence and ensure end-user acceptance of this new form of travel. Greater safety, increased mobility, and environmental sustainability can all be achieved.Driving the revolution, highly integrated semiconductors and sensors deliver important answers to the automotive industry’s demands for extremely small size, high reliability, and low cost.Rudy Ramos is the project manager for the Technical Content Marketing team at Mouser Electronics.
