Track and field championships starts today

first_imgThe Kaiva Central Team from Popondetta and Team Manus were the first to arrive in Lae as many teams were due yesterday.Papua New Guinean sprint Queen Toea Wisil also arrived in Lae at midday yesterday with her coach Tony Fairweather, to compete in the women’s 100m on Saturday. In the men’s division, a tough battle is expected as both Nazmie Lee Marai and Wesley Logorava have shown good form this season in the 200m whilst in the 100m, they will face one of PNG’s best Kupun Wisil. Moreover, Martin Orovo will face an in-form George Yamak in the men’s 800m and 1500m with the national record under threat on Saturday’s 1500m race.Nevertheless, most teams have arrived yesterday for the event; however, for team Enga, the unrest in Port Moresby has forced them to pull out as a result of uncertainty on whether the Highlands Highway will be open.Meanwhile, team Simbu on the other end has been warned to get its house in order or face sanctioning by Athletics PNG for failing to comply with entry requirements.Athletics PNG president Tony Green said this as a result of receiving a late list of 250 participants yesterday.“We have problems every year with Simbu officials constantly making changes to their entries, even during the competition, and this will not be tolerated,” Green said.Green urged all team managers to finalise their actual entries immediately upon arrival in order to facilitate the smooth running of the competition. There was no word from Team West New Britain and their participation seems to be in doubt as president Green expressed disappointment, saying: “It would be a great pity if one of the best up and coming sprinter Lyenne  Nilmo did not make it to Lae as that would mean that she would not be considered for the Melanesian Championships”.Her duel with Nancy Malamut was one of the highlights of the last PNG Games and Athletics PNG is keen to field a junior women’s 4x100m with Miriam Peni and Afure Adah joining these two.last_img
